Apple Crisp Crumble

Apple crisp crumble is one of our favorite desserts. So simple to put together, easy to add variations to, and gives you the satisfaction, warmth, and festive fall feel of apple pie without the fuss. I love the mess of eating it in a bowl with ice cream.

Ingredients

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all purpose flour (and rolled oats, total, could be up to 1.5 cups)

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) melted butter and stir with a fork until crumbly.

Filling

  • 2 ½ pounds Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples (about 6 cups, 6-7 apples cut up, feel free to keep skin on)

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons corn starch

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly spray an 8 or 9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

  • Make the crumble. In a medium bowl combine all purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, baking powder and cinnamon. Whisk to combine.

  • Prepare the filling. In a large bowl, combine apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, cornstarch (or flour if using) and ground cinnamon.

  • Transfer apple mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.

  • Sprinkle crumble mixture evenly over the top of the filling.

  • Bake for 45-50 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown on top.

  • Serve with vanilla ice cream!

When this comes out of the oven piping hot, it’s so delicious with a scoop of melting vanilla ice cream. Even after being refrigerated overnight, I love eating it cold as well since the filling holds its shape better and the flavors really deepen. It heats up perfectly too, so this is a great dessert to make, enjoy, keep, and keep enjoying for a few days.
